Parts of Dhaka reel under disruptions in gas supply

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Parts of Dhaka reel under disruptions in gas supply

Gas supplies to homes and CNG-filling stations in different areas of the capital were disrupted for 24 hours yesterday (Saturday), thanks to emergency maintenance work in the gas transmission system. As a result, a large number of the capital’s residents from Gabtali, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Lalmatia, Dhanmondi, Azimpur, Kalabagan, Shyamoli and Agargaon experienced a sudden gas crisis from early Saturday morning. Residents in these areas said they had not been aware of the decision. “When I went to cook in the kitchen in the morning, I found there was no gas supply. If the authorities had informed us about the crisis earlier, we would’ve managed our food for the period,” said Jahanara Khatun, a homemaker of Mohammadpur area.

Saugato Bosu, a resident of Agargaon area, said he could not have breakfast despite visiting six restaurants in the Agargon area as there was no gas supply.

“We didn’t get any previous announcements regarding the shutdown of gas supply in our area. This caused suffering on a mass scale,” said Abdur Rahim, another resident of

Mirpur area.

Many residents of Gabtali, Lalmatia, Azimpur, Kalabagan, Taltola and Shyamoli were reported to have faced similar problems.

Officials of the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd said they detected a leakage on a 20-inch diameter pipeline at the Gas Transmission Company Ltd (GTCL) at Ashulia station on Friday, which led to this sudden disruption in gas supplies.

The GTCL has been working to fix the problem at the station.

This process is expected to be completed by Sunday morning, said the GTCL officials. Titas Gas deputy general manager Armanul Reza Bhuiyan told The Independent: “As the incident occurred suddenly, we couldn’t immediately make any public announcement.”

“This was caused by a technical fault in the valve of a transmission station of Gas Transmission Company Ltd (GTCL) at Ashulia,” said Bhuiyan. He added, “We don’t have any alternative arrangements to handle the situation in those areas as the two other transmission stations at Demra and Uttara were not adequate to meet the demand for gas in the areas where the supplies were affected.”

According to a mobile SMS from Titas, parts of Ashulia, Savar, Aminbazar, Gabtali, Mirpur, Paikpara, Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Ring Road, Mansurabad, Kadirabad, Mohammadpur, Lalmatia, Dhanmondi, Azimpur and Hazaribag may experience a gas outage or low gas pressure. Titas supplies gas to nearly 2.8 million residences in Dhaka. It also provides gas to various industrial areas and factories.
