No registered graduate polls at RU for 19 years

Jahidul Islam, RU

The election for graduate student representatives has not been held in Rajshahi University (RU) for the last 19 years due to the reluctance of the authorities concerned. But the Rajshahi University (RU) ordiance-1973 says that the poll should be held every three years.
However, representatives from the teaching community are chosen every two years through the senate–syndicate election. Here teachers vote to elect nine faculty deans, six syndicate members, six academic council members, three finance committee members, a member for the planning and development committee, and 33 senate members.  But, there is no opportunity for the graduates in these polls. So, varsity students are being deprived of their rights to have representatives in the senate.
Sources say the last registered graduate election was held on May 30, 1997, where students backed by the BNP-Jamaat combine secured victory. Six members, out of the 25 elected, have already died, but no initiatives have been taken to fulfil these posts yet.
Even the RU senate body is becoming ineffective due to the absence of any elected registered graduates in each session. Therefore, the senate session cannot be held every year. Dr Anowar Hossain Anu, former student of the university, said that the vice-chancellor was not appointed according to the ordinance as there was no student body like the RUCSU.
All the activities of the university are being conducted by the political persons, he alleged. “According to the 1973 ordinance, 105 senate members, including 25 registered graduates, should select the vice-chancellor.  But since the last election, the graduates could not be registered as voters or candidates in any election of the university,” he noted.
The RU Chhatra League general secretary, Faishal Ahmed Runu, said: “We have demanded the inclusion of students' representatives in the syndicate election so that students can play a role in varsity operations”.
Pro vice-chancellor Prof. Chowdhury Mohammed Zakaria said the administration alove could not hold the election to select graduate student representatives. "If all political parties demand such elections, the authorities concerned will consider the matter," he added.
