New power connection now in 5 minutes

Our Correspondent, Tangail
New power connection now in 5 minutes

One fine morning, some people came to the house of Md Monjurul Islam, a farmer of Mussudi village, and asked him if he needed a power connection. Monjurul told them he had heard that a new connection costs Tk. 10,000 and he did not have that kind of money.

But Monjurul did not know that things have changed. Thanks to Dhanbari Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS), the poor farmer instantly received a new power connection along with a meter at a cost of only Tk. 515.

Monjurul could not believe what had been happening was real. But when a bulb lit up the house, he realised it was a dream come true.  Abdul Hakim of village Paiska and Kamrul Hasan of Miapara were also provided the same service under a special programme called ‘Alor Feriwala’.

Alor Feriwala, a new venture of the PBS, has gained ground in Dhanbari, Mirzapur and Delduwar upazilas under Tangail district.

The PBS is trying to provide power connections to all people. Under the venture, anyone seeking electricity is being given instant connections with a meter. Employees of Mymensingh PBS-1 under its Dhanbari zonal office and those of PBS Tangail-1 are going to the houses of poor people seeking power. They give a new connection within five minutes of the demand being placed. The PBS employees, carrying equipment in vans, go to the customers’ houses. The venture has earned much praise.

A van equipped with meters and cables, two to three line men, and a wiring inspector go from one village to another from morning till evening to provide new power connections to rural people. The new customers do not have to pay any extra money and encounter any harassment. Earlier, customers had to run after PBS employees to get a meter. They had to pay bribes and wait for months to get a connection.

Md Shahinur Rahman, AGM of Mymensingh PBS-1 of the Dhanbari DGM office, told this correspondent that the programme was launched on January 7 and would continue till 100 per cent connection in the upazila was achieved. Fifty connections were given in the last four days.

Rahman said that said agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque had instructed that people should ot face any harrassment while receiving power connections. Customers have to pay Tk. 115 as membership fee and Tk. 400 as security money for domestic lines and Tk. 800 for commercial lines. Receipts are being given for the money collected.

The PBS employees are also attending to problems of old customers. The DGM of Gorai PBS said that about 95 per cent of the connections had been provided in Mirzapur upazila. They expect to achieve 100 per cent mark within the next five to six months.
