The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities detained a total of 6 students of Dhaka University (DU) on Saturday night from the central field of the university while they were ‘taking drugs’. The detainees were Habib Ahsan, Khairul Islam Shuvo and Ashfaq Hossain, fourth year student of Development, Nusrat Jahan, master’s student of Psychology Jannatul Ferdous, fourth year student of Pharmacy and Samiya Haque, fourth year student of Management and Information System (MIS) department. Source said, JU Proctorial body with some security officials detained the six students of Dhaka University from central playground around 2 am when they were drinking ‘alcohol’. Later, the security officials took them to JU Security Office for further interrogation.
After searching body, security officials recovered some yaba tablets, cigarettes and university’s identity card from them. In the meantime, the detained DU students confessed their mistakes and vowed for not taking drugs for the next time. JU Chief Security official Shudipta Shahin said, “We detained a total of six students of Dhaka University for taking drugs. After interrogation, we had informed that frequently they came to our campus and took drugs”.
“We informed their family members and finally we released them after taking deponent”, he added.
Meanwhile, JU Proctorial body also detained another 10 people including members of a band team, who came to perform at the cultural events of the winter festival from the Selim Al Deen Muktamancha and Teacher-Student Center (TSC) area through a sudden drive for taking alcohol and cannabis.
All of the detainees were taken to JU Security office and released them after taking deponent.
When contacted JU Proctor Associate Professor Firoz-Ul Hasan said, “We noticed that outsiders came to take drugs in our campus during different cultural events at the Selim Al Deen Muktamancha after evening. So, we conducted an anti-drug drive on Saturday night when the cultural events of winter festival were going’.
“We will show zero tolerance against drug on the campus. We will conduct such drive in future’, he added.
