Holey Artisan Bakery attack financier put on remand

A key accused in the Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery terror attack and a member of blacklisted militant outfit Jama’atul Muslimin (JM) were arrested from Gazipur and Dhaka yesterday. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Md Mammunur Rashid alias Ripon alias Rezaul Karim alias Reza, alleged supplier of money and arms to the cafe attackers, from Board Bazar in Gazipur while detective police arrested Rizwan Harun, an active member of JM and former owner of Lakehead Grammar School, from the capital.

Ripon, who is a member of the banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was arrested during a raid at Broad Bazar around 11.15pm on Saturday, RAB’s legal and media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan told reporters in Dhaka yesterday. He was later placed on a five-day remand.

As much as Tk. 147,755 was also seized from the accused, the RAB official added. According to RAB sources, around Tk. 39 lakh, arms and ammunition were brought from a neighbouring country for the terror attack at Gulshan in 2016. Ripon played the main role in this regard.

The sources said Ripon and fellow JMB member Shariful Islam Khaled, who were involved in the murder of Rajshahi University professor Rezaul Karim, had gone to India in April 2016.

On July 1, 2016, a group of armed militants had stormed Holey Artisan Bakery in the capital’s Gulshan area and killed 20 hostages, mostly foreign nationals. Two police officials were also killed during the 12-hour standoff.

After the incident, police had filed a case against 21 JMB men. Of them, 13 were killed during several drives, six were arrested and two, including Ripon, were absconding. However, the fugitive Ripon was finally arrested on Saturday.

Ripon has confessed to supplying arms, explosives and money to the café attackers.

BSS adds:  The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Rizwan Harun from Dhanmondi area of the capital yesterday morning.

“Harun was booked in a case lodged under Anti Terrorism Act with Gulshan Police Station on January 30, 2018,” DMP DC (Media and Public Relations Division) Md Masudur Rahman said.

JM was blacklisted by the govt in 2005 as its ill- motive came into light. JM follows the ideology of Al Qaida and used to lure youths from different den including Harun’s office near North South University in the capital.

“Jama’atul Muslimin members raised different institutions including Lakehead Grammar School to continue their activities in the capital. They used to entice youths and make them join into the militant group.” Rahman added.
