Amid much enthusiasm South African great AB de Villiers joined Rangpur Riders yesterday to take part in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for the first time in his career.

The team management informed that de Villiers, adorably called as Mr. 360 degree for his ability to play shots in all corner of the ground will play seven matches for them in the sixth edition of the cash-rich tournament.

His first match will be against hosts Sylhet Sixers tomorrow (Saturday) at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Immediate after landing Bangladesh de Villiers reached Sylhet to join the side.

He looked elated to play the BPL for the first time but said he is yet to set any specific target in the tournament.

For a struggling Rangpur side which won just two matches out six is expected to play a key part behind changing their fortune as his side is yet to pick the momentum in the tournament.

Riders would be looking forward to the former South African skipper as he is known to be a game changer for his exploits with the bat.

“I am happy to join BPL,’’ AB told reporters while entering the team hotel at Sylhet but added that he is yet to set his own goal.

“But I did not set any target yet,’’ he added.

The explosive batsman was the second cricketer outside the player draft signed by Riders as they had combative England batsman Alex Hales as their first player outside of the draft.

Rangpur Riders make a deadly combination at the top of the order with Chris Gayle, Alex Hales, and AB de Villiers.

However when there was belief that Villiers will solve all the problems of Rangpur Riders, its head coach Tom Moody warned his team not to expect too much from the explosive batsman.

“I think AB de Villiers in any side is going to add a lot of value. But we’d be foolish as a side to think that he’s going to be the magic that’s going to make a difference. We know that yes, he is going to add value, but there are talented players that need to also continue to do the hard work. It’s a collective effort; there’s no individual that can make massive changes. But we welcome him into our side because we know we are bringing in a world-class player,” Moody said.

“As I said AB in any dressing room is gonna add value, but at the end of the day as a side we need to not just rely on his conditions; we need to individually step up and make sure that we improve our game not only with the batting, but with the ball and in the field.”
