AL allies should act as oppn in House: Quader

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader has said that their allies should act as opposition in Parliament to make it more effective and functional. He was talking to reporters after visiting the party’s "victory rally" ground at Suhrawardi Udyan in the city yesterday (Thursday). The ruling party is going to hold a grand rally at the historic Suhrawardi Udyan on Saturday to celebrate its victory in the 11th parliamentary elections. The party secured two-thirds majority, bagging 259 seats out of the total 300.

“Parliament will be effective and functional if there is a strong opposition in the House. A strong opposition can help the government correct its wrongdoings, if any. Otherwise, Parliament will become one-sided,” Quader said. Replying to a question on the existing relationship between the AL and its alliance partners, Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said its an ideal alliance. There is neither any conflict nor tension within the alliance, he added.

“There is no infighting, tension and disturbance in our alliance. if there's any misunderstanding, we'll solve it through discussions,” he added. Replying to

another question, the AL general secretary compared BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with a “reckless driver”. “The government has patience, no matter how wild the defeated are,” he said. About the party’s Saturday rally, the AL leader said the rally would turn into a human sea, with the spontaneous participation of party leaders and workers. This will be the first political rally in the city after the December 30 general election.
