The buzzer rang even before host Khaled Muhiuddin could complete his final question, and Shamim Ahmed from Narsingdi, one of the most promising among the final contenders in Bangladesh Jiggasha quiz show, spurted his impeccable answer. The audience erupted in applause as the final scoreboard read 105 for Shamim, 100 for Mohsin Uddin of Pirojpur, 90 for Benzir Ahmed from Jhenidah and 60 for Pritish Chandra Biswas from Barishal.

As the final bell rang, Shamim’s parents ran to the stage with tears of joy - their son has claimed a victory for them on the nation’s 48th Victory Day on Sunday. Thus came to end the final round of Bangladesh Jiggasha quiz competition, offering a record Tk 1 crore grand prize.

The quiz on the achievements and hurdles of Bangladesh since its independence was organised and aired by Independent Television and sponsored by the IFIC Bank.

In the first phase, 64 contestants were selected from about 80,000 participants from all over the country through written examinations held in divisional cities.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal handed over the cheque worth one crore taka to Shamim, and touched his forehead with Shamim’s in a congratulatory gesture.

Beximco Group Vice-Chairman and Independent TV Chairman Salman F Rahman, IFIC Bank Managing Director and CEO Shah A Sarwar and Independent TV CEO and Editor-in-Chief M Shamsur Rahman were also present.

“This event to share knowledge of the country and the achievements is highly appreciated. I would request the organisers to continue this journey in the years to come,” said the planning minister.

“We made sure that youths from all over the country could participate in the event. And the effort was fruitful as none of the four finalists hail from Dhaka. Congratulations to all the finalists! Also, congratulations to the winners of the previous rounds,” said Salman F Rahman.

“I pride myself in being a part of this initiative. My heartfelt thanks go to Independent TV for organising such a knowledge-based event to share knowledge of the country,” said IFIC Bank Managing Director and CEO Shah A Sarwar.

“We want this journey to continue in the future. Though it is a huge task, we want to organise it every year. We are really fortunate to get IFIC Bank beside us. We hope that more organisations will come forward in the days to come,” said Independent TV CEO and Editor-in-Chief M Shamsur Rahman.

With a beaming face, Shamim said, “This one-crore taka will help me fulfill my dreams.”

Mohsin, the first runner-up who was awarded Tk 25 lacs, said he would work for qualitative development of street children and women. Benzir Ahmed, the second runner-up receiving Tk 15 lacs, said he would dedicate himself to expanding libraries. Third Runner-up Pritish Chandra Biswas was awarded Tk 5 lacs.
