Victory Day 2018

Victory Day 2018

Today the nation is proudly observing the 47th anniversary of the glorious Victory Day. On 16th December in 1971, our country achieved victory after nine-month intense war against the Pakistani occupation forces. The hearts of millions of people will pulsate with the joy of freedom today. The hearts of those who have lost their near and dear ones will be bruised with agony.

We also remember, on this day with gratitude, our foreign friends, particularly India, for their support during the crucial nine months of the war. The liberation of Bangladesh was inevitable. Pakistan was an absurd geographic entity that simply could not last. However the West Pakistani rulers did not help their cause too much by deliberately ignoring and humiliating the Bengalis at every step. Pakistan offered a bizarre example in nationhood. Created expressly to safeguard the Muslims of the subcontinent, Pakistan perpetrated the biggest genocide of Muslims since the arrival of Islam in South Asia.

On the night of March 25, Pakistani military conducted a cowardly attack on innocent sleeping Dhaka people. They conducted a mass killing at different places in Dhaka including Pilkhana, EPR, Rajarbag Police Lines and Dhaka University along with student hotels and teachers' residences. In the initial days after the victory there was scepticism from various quarters as to whether the newly established country will survive for long. Indeed many among the international community made doomsday prediction about Bangladesh. Proving the nay-sayers wrong Bangladesh has not only survived but also flourished in the ensuing years. With its strong economy and well established democratic values Bangladesh is a respected nation in the global community.

However in spite of the tremendous economic progress, the egalitarian and secular society that our martyrs died for is yet to materialise as economic inequality, along with social and economic imbalances continue to draw us back. It is the responsibility of the government, political leaders, civil society members and the people from all walks of life to work together for safeguarding the independence and sovereignty of the country. Poverty, illiteracy and other ills confronting the country should be addressed properly. There is no alternative to achieving the MDG and SDG by the next year.
