Parties submit final lists of candidates to EC

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Parties submit final lists
of candidates to EC

On the last day of withdrawal of candidacies, different political parties and alliances yesterday submitted letters to the Election Commission (EC) with the lists of those of their candidates who will contest in and withdraw from the general elections, scheduled to be held on December 30.

Parties like the Awami League (AL), the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jatiya Party and the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) have also requested the EC to allot their respective electoral symbols to some of the candidates of their alliance partners.

There are provisions as regards the withdrawal of candidacy in the Representation of the People Order, 1972.

Under Provision 16(1) of the RPO, ‘any validly nominated candidate may, by notice in writing signed by him and delivered, on or before the withdrawal day, to the Returning Officer, either by

such candidate in person or by an agent authorised in this behalf in writing by such candidate, withdraw his candidature’.

Provision 16 (2) states: ‘where more than one candidate are nominated in the same constituency by a registered political party, the chairman or secretary or a person holding the same rank of the party shall inform, by notice in writing signed by him and delivered, either by himself or by any other person authorised by him in this behalf on or before the withdrawal day, to the Returning Officer, about the final nomination of a candidate and the other candidate of that party shall be ceased to be a candidate.’

The BNP requested the EC to allot its electoral symbol—the ‘sheaf of paddy’—to a total of 26 candidates of its alliance partners as part of their seat-sharing. Among the 26, seven candidates of Gonoforum will get the paddy sheaf symbol while four from the Liberal Democratic Party, four from JSD (Rob), four from Krishak Shramik Janata League, three from Jamiyote Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh, two from Khelafat Majlish and one each from Bangladesh Kalyan Party and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) will also get it.

The AL-led Grand Alliance requested the EC to distribute its electoral symbol ‘the boat’ to its 258 candidates in the upcoming general elections.

On the other hand, Jatiya Party has fielded 29 candidates under the AL-led 14-Party Grand Alliance. They will contest the polls with the electoral symbol ‘boat’. In addition, the Jatiya Party has fielded 173 of its candidates who will contest the polls with the party’s electoral symbol ‘the plough’.

Meanwhile, JSD (Inu) has requested the EC to cancel the candidature of 37 of its candidates while the party has submitted a letter to the EC to allot the ‘boat’ symbol of the Awami League to its three candidates as they are contesting the polls under the AL-led Grand Alliance.

The candidates are party chief Hasanul Huq Inu from Kushtia-2, Shirin Akhter from Feni-1 and AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen from Bogura-4.

The JSD (Inu) has also requested the EC to grant the electoral symbol of the ‘torch’ to its five candidates.

On the other hand, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BASAD) yesterday (Sunday) submitted its final list of 45 candidates who will contest the polls. The party has requested the EC to distribute its electoral symbol of the ‘ladder’ among the candidates as per its list.

Under the election schedule, the commission will distribute the electoral symbols to the candidates today (Monday), which would enable them to officially kick-start the election campaign.

But the EC warned the candidates to follow the electoral code of conduct while campaigning; otherwise, they would face the music.
