Eminent citizens ‘reluctant’ to Oikyafront call

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Even though Dr Kamal Hossain, leader of the newly formed alliance Jatiya Oikyafront, wants to involve some eminent citizens in the poll process for gaining better acceptability in the civil society, most of them have so far shown no interest in the matter. When contacted by The Independent, they said they would not want active involvement in party politics. Dr Kamal Hossain recently sent a list of 10 eminent citizens to his major alliance partner, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), stating that their involvement in the upcoming election would  increase the acceptability of the alliance among common people.

The 10 citizens are: Sultana Kamal, Dr Devpriya Bhattacharya, Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Dr Akbar Ali Khan, Dr Shahdin Malik, Dr Badiul Alam Mazumder, Barriser Mainul Hosein, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman and Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury. Sources in the BNP told The Independent that the party had received Dr Kamal Hossain’s letter and concurred with its content.

Among the names listed in the letter, Mainul Hosein and Zafrullah Chowdhury have already got involved in the electoral politics of the Jatiya Oikyafront. Mainul, however, is currently in jail because of a remark he made against a female journalist.

Talking with The Independent, some of the eminent citizens on the list said that their chances of getting involved in the election “actively and politically” were very thin.

Dr Badiul Alam Majumder said he had not received any such proposal from either Dr Kamal or from the BNP. “My organisation, Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujon), works to ensure people's voting and other democratic rights. I'll continue my work from a neutral position and won't get involved in party politics,” he added.

Dr Akbar Ali Khan told The Independent that he would not get involved in “any sort of party politics”. “I have neither the age nor any wish to participate in any political movement now,” he said.

Talking with The Independent, Dr Shahdin Malik said: “Sir (Dr Kamal)

has asked me to consider this proposal only a few days ago. But if I decide to get involved in active politics, I would do so by declaring it in a press conference. As of now, I can tell you that I have no such wish.”  He, however, was seen giving legal advice to leaders of the Jatyio Oikyafront a few days ago. When asked about that, Shahdhin Malik said: “As a lawyer, I give legal advice to a lot of people including politicians. But it doesn’t indicate that I have joined

politics!”
