Asian Open Karate in Dhaka from Nov 9

All Asian Open Karate Championship will take place in Dhaka on November 9-10 at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in the capital. In the 17th edition of the competition a total of 18 countries including hosts will participate in the two-day meet organised by the International Karate Organisation (IKO) Khukushi, Bangladesh branch.  

President Abdul Hamid will open the competition as the chief guest. State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder, former state minister for foreign affairs Dipu Moni and International Director Khatsuhit Gorai will attend as special guests.

Major (retd) Khondokar Nurul Afsar, president of the IKO Khushin Bangladesh Branch and the general secretary Monir Ahmed stated all in a press conference yesterday at the Dutch bangle Bank Auditorium of the Bangladesh Olympic Association.

Eight boys and four girls from Bangladesh will take part in the competition. Khondokar Nurul Afsar while talking about the preparation of Bangladesh team said, “Our boys and girls have been taking preparation for this competition, I believe our players are not far behind and they will be able to success.

General secretary of the International Karate Organisation (IKO) Munir Ahmed Bhuiyan said that they have been taking preparation from January targeting this competition and by this time they also participated in an international competition.

Munir, when talking with this correspondent yesterday said, “We started our activities with 40 boys after three phase scrutiny we made the final squad of 12 players including eight boys and four girls.”

“We are targeting to win some medals in the championship, we have three players, who are experienced playing in the international meets who played in the World Championship in 2011. Mathews Ricky Gomez was fourth in an international tournament held in Kuwait this year.”

“Shahrear Zaman Sumon obtained second position in an international competition in 2016 was held in held Dhaka while Rezwanur Rahman Raihan also has international experience playing in the international event,” informed Munir, who is a Black-belt, 5 Dan.

Replying to a query said, “We are expecting more with our women participants. As we have information, women participants from other countries are coming will not tough for us, only Iranian women are only strong opponents, if our girls could beat them then bright chance to be championship in the women division,” said Munir.
