Our Correspondent

A Tangail court yesterday rejected the bail plea of AL legislator Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, who is an accused in the murder of AL leader Farook Ahmed in 2013. The first district and session judge of Tangail, Maksuda Khanom, rejected the MP’s bail plea after hearing the deposition of three defence witnesses. The court has fixed November 22 as the next date of hearing. Following this, Rana, who is the MP of Tangail-3 (Ghatail), was taken back to Kashempur Jail amid tight security.

Lawyers Abdul Baki Mia and Arfan Molla appeared in defence, while assistant public prosecutor Monirul Islam Khan represented the state. As per the case records, AL leader Farook Ahmed was murdered on January 18, 2013. The Detective Branch of police took over the investigation and arrested two aides of Rana, Aminul Islam Raja and Mohammad Ali. The two confessed in court of being involved in the killing.

The accused also disclosed the names of Rana and his three brothers for masterminding the murder. The accused brothers are Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, the ex-mayor of Tangail municipality and former secretary of Tangail city AL, Zahidur Rahman Khan Kakon, secretary of Tangail Byabosayee Okkoya Jote, and Saniat Khan Bappa, ex-vice president of central BCL and vice president of Government Sadat College.

The MP had surrendered in court on September 18, 2016, after absconding for 22 months. He has been lodged in Kashempur Jail since then. His brothers are still on the run. Rana was also named in a charge-sheet for the attempt to murder BCL leader Abu Sayed Rubel on September 20.
