Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned Transcom Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Latifur Rahman for interrogation over graft allegations that include amassing wealth illegally and money laundering. The anti-graft watchdog yesterday issued a notice, signed by ACC deputy director Nasir Uddin Ahmed,instructing Latifur Rahman to appear at the ACC headquarters on October 18 with his national identity card and attested copy of passport.

According to the ACC, Latifur Rahman amassed illegal wealth by evading taxes and VAT under the Transcom conglomerate. The commission initiated the inquiry after receiving a complaint that Latifur Rahman, who received Business for Peace Award for ethical business from Oslo-based Business for Peace Foundation in 2012, and his family members accumulated illegal wealth through evading VAT, electricity bills and gas bills from different companies of the group.

The other allegations include money laundering to several countries including America. According to the ACC, there are also allegations against Latifur Rahman that he constructed the Philips Bhaban by grabbing railway lands at Mohakhali DOHS in the capital. ACC deputy director Nasir Uddin Ahmed is investigating the allegations against the Transcom Group chairman.

ACC sources said the investigation against Latifur had started a year ago. In the meantime, two inquiry officers of ACC have been changed while conducting the investigation. Companies under the Transcom Group are Eskayef Pharmaceutical Ltd, Mediastar Ltd, Transcom Beverages Ltd, Transcom Distribution Co Ltd, Transcom Foods Ltd, Transcom Electronics Ltd, Transcom Consumer Products Ltd, Bangladesh Lamps Ltd, Transcom Cables Ltd, Tea Holdings Ltd, Reliance Insurance Ltd, Transcraft Ltd and Bangladesh Electrical Industries Ltd.

Media Star owns Bangla daily Prothom Alo and FM radio station ABC Radio. Latifur Rahman also has stakes in Media World that owns English daily The Daily Star.
