De Villiers to make BPL debut for Rangpur

Widely considered as the most fearsome batsman in the shorter version of the cricket, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers is all set to make his debut in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in January next year, as the defending champions Rangpur Riders are believed to rope in him for nine matches of the group phase.

If the team qualifies for knock out phase, he will play there also but the record holder of fastest ODI half-century, century and 150, will be available for Rangpur side after their first three matches. A regular player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL, Villiers also broke several records in T20 cricket also. He is reportedly to take the captaincy role with RCB, replacing Virat Kohli in next IPL season also.

He is one of the Riders two signing from outside of the draft, apart from their four retained players Chris Gayle, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Nazmul Islam and Mohammad Mithun.

England opener Alex Hales who refused to tour Bangladesh in 2016, citing security fear, is the other player to have signed up for Rangpur Rider for the 2018-19 season.

The BPL is scheduled to be held in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet from January 5, clashing with the Big Bash League in Australia and the UAE T20x tournament.

Hales, who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in this year's IPL, will be reunited with coach Tom Moody who took Riders to their maiden BPL title last year. Riders will fill the rest of their squad during the October 25 players' draft.

While Hales does face a hearing in front of the ECB's Cricket Disciplinary Commission in December, over his part in the incident last year that saw Ben Stokes charged with affray, he would only not be available for the BPL if any suspension was extended beyond England involvement. England are due in the Caribbean in January, but will begin their tour playing Tests.

It is also learnt England start Dawid Malan and uncapped Lewis Gregory are the two signings of Khulna Titans out of the draft.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Dynamites has signed up West Indies start Andre Russell and England opener Jason Roy as their two signings out of the main draft.
