Fisheries minister releases fish fry at DU pond

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda yesterday released various species of fish fry in the pond of Jagannath Hall at Dhaka University (DU).

Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and Fisheries Department jointly organised the programme.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof DrAkhtaruzzaman inaugurated the programme. Fisheries and Livestock minister addressed the programme as the chief guest while Jagannath Hall Provost Dr Asim Sarkar presided over the function. Senior officials of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, teachers and students of DU, residents of Jagannath Hall, among others, were also present on this occasion.

IU admission process begins Sept 15

KUSHTIA: The admission process of Islamic University (IU) for the first-year honours courses under the academic year 2018-19 will begin from September 15 and continue till October 10.

IU acting registrar SM Abdul Latif said the admission tests of 33 departments will be held from November 4 to 7 under four units. The unit wise examination schedule will be published later.

The tests would be taken introducing written exam besides taking MCQ while .25 (point two five) number will be cut for every wrong answer from MCQ in the admission test, he added.

Admission seekers will have to register for the tests by paying Tk 500 for 3 departments in ‘A’ unit, Tk 1,500 for 13 departments in ‘B’ unit, Tk 800 for 6 departments in ‘C’ unit and Tka 1,300 for 11 departments in ‘D’ unit.

More information about the admission tests, registration procedures, fee payment and eligibility is available on the admission index and university website: www.iu.ac.bd. 2,275 seats will be filled up according to the merit list in this academic year while another 161 aspirants will be enrolled into the university from the quotas.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner calls on UGC chief

Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Dhaka Crisanthe De Silva yesterday called on University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan at UGC Bhaban.

During the meeting, Sri Lankan High Commissioner Crisanthe De Silva said the medical education imparted by Bangladeshi educational institutions is in high esteem in Sri Lanka, said a UGC press release.

Crisanthe also stressed the need for fostering bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka along with other SAARC countries.

They also discussed about the matters related to collecting additional fees for internship programme from the Sri Lankan medical students who graduated from the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC). The UGC Chairman Mannan assured the Sri Lankan High Commissioner of resolving the problems immediately and asked the USTC authority to provide the original certificates to the Sri Lankan students by September 20, 2018. “Otherwise, UGC will issue a public notice asking the neighbouring countries not to send their students in USTC for medical education,” he warned.

Chittagong Medical University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr Mohammad Ismail Khan, USTC VC Prof Dr Probhat Chandra Barua, Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum, UGC members–Prof Dr Akhtar Hossain, Prof Dr M Shah Nowaz Ali and representatives from Health, Education and Foreign Affairs Ministry were present in the meeting.

Annual anthropology conference held at JU

SAVAR: A daylong conference on anthropology was held yesterday on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus.

JU Anthropology department organised the daylong conference at the Zahir Raihan auditorium. Presided over by Chairman of JU Anthropology department Prof Mirza Taslima Sultan, Dean of Social Science faculty Prof Rasheda Akhter inaugurated the programme as the chief guest in the morning. Addressing the inaugural session, Professor Rasheda Akhter said, “Such conference is a good platform for academic exchange in a cross cultural and holistic approach. Our main aim is to stimulate discussion, debate, dialogue and research to broaden our understanding and to generate new ideas to build a better humane world.”

Dr SM Nurul Alam presented the keynote paper on ‘Current Scenario of Social Science Research in Bangladesh: A Way Forward’. The conference also featured four academic segments on different anthropological aspects of Culture, Power and History.
