With the slogan ‘Tarunyer Joyogane Asun Anonder Monche’, a five-day theatre festival--organised by Industrial Development Leasing Company of Bangladesh Limited (IDLC)--will begin today on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will inaugurate the festival as chief guest at 4pm today at the National Theatre Hall of BSA, where along with prominent playwrights, theatre artistes and activists, chief executive officer and managing director of IDLC Arif Khan will also be present at the event.

A total of 10 prominent theatre troupes will participate in the festival. Theatre, Nagorik Natya Sampraday, Dhaka Theatre, Padatik Natya Sangsad, Palakar, BotTola, Prachyanat, Prangonemor, Dhaka University’s theatre and performance studies department and Jahangirnagar University’s drama and dramatics department will stage their plays at the festival.

The festival will open with Prangonemor’s ‘Hasonjaner Raja’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA. Written by eminent writer Shakoor Majid, ‘Hasonjaner Raja’, which is the 13th production of the troupe, has been directed by Ananta Hira. The different roles of the play will be played by Ramiz Razu, Awal Reza, Mainul Tawhid, Sagor Roy, Shuvechchha Rahman, Jewel Rana, Asha, Prokriti, Preeti, Sujay, Niru, Sumon, Badhon and Ruma.

Later, Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Dhaka University will stage Nobel laureate Maxim Gorky’s play ‘The Lower Depths’ at the National Theatre Hall of BSA at 8:30pm. Translated by Tanvir Mokammel, the play is directed by Tanvir Nahid Khan.
