Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono arrives in the capital today to discuss all the bilateral aspects between the two countries as well as the ongoing Rohingya crisis that has affected Bangladesh in a bad manner. The minister, who will arrive from Myanmar, the home of the displaced Rohingyas currently living in Bangladesh, will hold a bilateral talk with his Bangladeshi counterpart Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at a state guest house. The Japanese foreign minister will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the afternoon. According to the officials concerned, the entire range of bilateral issues will feature during the bilateral meeting. The Bangladesh side will ask the Japanese foreign minister to use its good office to persuade Myanmar to take

back their people immediately, they said. Kono met Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi yesterday in Naypyitaw and discussed how to resolve Myanmar’s ongoing crisis involving the persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority group, according to Japanese media. Kono told a press briefing that during an hour-long meeting with Suu Kyi, who doubles as the country’s foreign minister, he called for allowing a newly established commission to conduct a free and transparent investigation into allegations of human rights abuses in Rakhine State.

The Japanese foreign minister told reporters that he also urged the Myanmar government to cooperate with the United Nations in accommodating returning refugees. He said that the Japanese government will continue to help solve problems by joining hands with Myanmar people and in close discussions with Suu Kyi.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland will arrive in the country tomorrow on a two day visit to have discussions with the prime minister, ministers and other public figures on priorities and commitments agreed by leaders at the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in April.
