Amar Desh acting editor injured in ‘BCL’ attack

Our Correspondent, Kushtia

Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily 'Amar Desh', was injured in an attack allegedly by a section of activists of Kushtia district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) after he obtained bail in a defamation case from a local court. Witnesses said over 100 BCL activists, led by district unit president Tushar Ahmed, carrying sticks, hockey-sticks and iron rods attacked the car carrying Mahmudur and his associates when they were leaving the court premises around 4:30pm. Former BNP lawmaker Syed Mahedi Ahmed Rumi took Mahmudur to the chamber of a lawyer, but the attackers followed him there.

The Amar Desh acting editor and his associates later left the court premises for Jashore by an ambulance without taking any treatment in the district town. They were earlier kept confined by the BCL activists in the court for about five hours. Police allegedly remained inactive during the incident.

Talking to journalists, Mahmudur said the attack on him reflected the scenario of the whole country. “It’s the real scenario of Bangladesh now. BCL carried out the attack to kill me,” he alleged.

The court of senior judicial magistrate MM Morshed granted bail to Mahmudur in a case filed against him for making derogatory comments on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mahmudur appeared before the court around 11:30am. Mahedi Ahmed Rumi and M Abdullah, secretary general of a faction of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), accompanied him. As the court granted Mahmudur bail, BCL activists raised slogans against him and demanded cancellation of the bail. They also tried to enter the courtroom several times, but police obstructed them.

The BCL men then gathered outside the court and blocked all the five gates. Police denied making any comment over the issue.

BCL leader Tushar Ahmed, who filed the defamation case with a Kushtia court on December 10 last year, denied their involvement in the attack.

Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a statement condemned the BCL attack on Mahmudur Rahman.
