Water efficient technology in Barind areas

Water efficient technology in Barind areas

It’s not a new find that underground water levels are slowly falling; keeping this in mind, there have been efforts by the government plus the private sectors to make the optimum use of surface water for farming and other uses. However, in the Barind areas, drought is common and, recently, there have been calls from specialists as well as policy makers to come up with sustainable methods to address water shortage.

At a seminar, the need for sensitizing the farmers was underlined and the proposals include teaching methods of farming that would need less irrigation and popularizing of alternative wetting system. In this regard, a prudent move would be to chalk out ways of preserving rain water to be used for irrigation later on.

If, with the support of development agencies, water preservation using rudimentary techniques is taught to farmers then dry periods need not be a matter of worry. Also, the government can look into constructing large reservoirs in dry areas to store water to be used during prolonged summer periods. Bangladesh has already introduced several varieties of rice that are flood resistant; it’s time drought resisting crops are introduced to farmers.

New technology can only develop when research is given priority. Here, the best incentive will be to offer monetary prizes plus national level recognition so that young scientists feel encouraged to work in the country and develop new methods. Also, rural farmers need to be given comprehensive idea about modern day farming, encapsulating usage of organic fertilizer, diversification of crops and techniques for getting the most by using the least amount of water.

Everything said and done, water economy is essential though the main cause of water shortage, due to unequal share of water with India, is often ignored. Excess or absence of water, both extremes can be tackled properly when water sharing with our neighbours is clearly delineated. Without a coherent water strategy with India, all methods for conservation or economy will eventually falter. Importance should be attached where it’s due, instead of searching for answers in peripheral areas.
