BUET student crushed under bus at Mirpur

Staff Reporter

Rash driving caused the death of a BUET student at Mirpur in the capital yesterday, a day after a former student of Jahangirnagar University was crushed under the wheels of a bus in Kalshi Flyover area. Sayed Masud Rana, 23, a final-year student of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT), was run over by a bus near Bangladesh National Zoo at Mirpur. Soon after the incident, irate university students blocked the busy Mirpur intersection for more than four hours. Police later intervened and cleared the road around 2pm.

Earlier, while Rana was commuting to his university campus in a rickshaw around 9:30am, a Dishari Paribahan bus hit the rickshaw from the back.  Rana fell on the road and he was crushed under the wheels of the speeding bus. Rana was rushed

to National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopedic Rehabilitation where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The rickshaw driver was also injured and he was being treated.

Eye-witnesses said both the bus driver and helper fled immediately after the incident.

Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge, Shah Ali Police station, has said they had seized the Deshari Poribahan bus. “Both the driver and the helper are absconding. A case will be filed against them,” he said.

The university authorities have postponed all classes and exams following the death of Masud Rana.

Azmol Hossain, joint registrar of the BUBT, said Rana was a student of the 30th batch of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). The accident took place while he was heading to the university campus yesterday. “Locals rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead. His body was handed over to his family members,” Hossain added.

Rana’s classmates demanded that the culprits be arrested soon and an exemplary punished be given to them.

Rana was the latest victim in the long list of persons to be killed in road accidents in the past few months. Just a day before, Shahriar Sourov Sejan, 28, a former student of Jahangirnagar University, was killed by a speeding bus near Kalshi Flyover.
