Bangladesh look to play in final

Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Team will take on the hosts Malaysia in the fifth and last fixture of the first leg in the ongoing ACC Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup at the Kinrara Academy Cup in Selangor, Kuala Lampur today.

The match is crucial for Bangladesh to progress to the final of the six-team tournament. If they can win the match, they will clash against the winners either Pakistan or India in the final on June 10.

Bangladesh eves’ meanwhile made a possibility of playing in the first-ever Asia Cup final when they thrashed Thailand by comprehensive nine wickets in the low-scoring fourth match at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

It was third emphatic victory for Bangladesh girls on the trot. Thailand, put in to bat, managed to put on a paltry 60 for eight in the stipulated 20 overs courtesy of N Koncharoenkai (15), S Saengsakaorat (14) and S Tippoch (13 not out) after which Bangladesh overhauled the target with ease keeping 53 balls and nine wickets in hand. Barring the trio, no batters of Thailan, who racked up their maiden win beating the hosts Malaysia, crossed the double digit figures. Salma Khatun and Nahida Akhter grabbed two wickets each for the winning side.

Opner Ayesha Sultana Suktara slotted the team home with Nigar Sultana after opener Shamima Sultana went for eight. Suktara was unbeaten on 25, while Nigar was identical 25 not out.

The Tigress launched their Asia Cup campaign with an unhappiness note when they conceded a six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka. But they then made a comeback by stunning mighty Pakistan with seven-wicket, the feat which was their first T20 victory against the top-ranked team.

Thereafter, Bangladesh eves’ made their Asia Cup billing stronger further when they thrashed six-time Asia Cup champions India by the identical margin what they did against Pakistan.

At the six-team points table, Bangladesh are languishing at third place with six points. Malaysia, who has yet to win any match, remained at the rock-bottom with no points. Both India and Pakistan chalked up the identical six-point each. They have all one match ahead.

Pakistan will next face off its arch-foe India, the match is ‘make or break’ situation for them today. Among them, those who will win their match will cruise to the six-team final which will be played at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Bangladesh women team earlier showed their mettle in the last two Asian Games when they went down to Pakistan in the final in Guangzhou Games in 2010 and Incheon Games in 2014. Bangladesh men’s team led by Mohammed Ashraful won the first ever gold medal for the country in Guangzhou Games.
