Bangladesh-born Doly Begum has been elected a member of the provincial parliament in Canada's Scarborough Southwest. Doly Begum, a candidate from National Democratic Party (NDP), bagged 19,751 votes to become the first ever Bangali to win in the elections, defeating a former high-ranking Toronto police official and a veteran Liberal MPP in Scarborough Southwest in the election held on Thursday. However, Ontario's Progressive Conservatives (PC) have secured a majority government in the election, ending nearly 15 years of Liberal power in the province.
With all 63 polls reporting, Bangladesh-born New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate Doly Begum had a commanding lead over her nearest rival, with 19,751
votes to 13,592 for PC candidate Gary Ellis, breaking the hold of a Liberal who has held the seat since 2003.
Born in Moulvibazar district, Doly went to Canada as a child with her parents and younger brother. She has lived in Scarborough most of her life.
She is a graduate of the University of Toronto and has a Masters in Development, Administration & Planning from University College London.
As Co-Chair of the Scarborough Health Coalition and Vice-Chair of Warden Woods Community Centre, she has worked hard to make lives better for the people of Scarborough.
