‘One-minute blackout on Mar 25 night’

Special Correspondent

The government has decided to observe a one-minute blackout programme on the night of March 25 to mark Mass Killing Day, a black day in Bangladesh’s history. The blackout will be observed from 9 pm to 9.01pm across the country, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters.

“We are going to take steps to observe the one-minute blackout programme properly. But emergency establishments like hospitals and service sector organisations will remain out of the programme’s purview,” the minister said after chairing a meeting on law and order on the occasion of Mass Killing Day and Independence Day. The meeting was held at the conference room of the home ministry.

“The authorities concerned will not switch off the electricity on time. But the people o will do it everywhere in respect to Mass Killing Day,” he said.

“The authorities concerned will air or publish advertisements through TV channels, radios and newspapers to observe the programme properly. Alongside, SMSs will be sent on mobile phones in this regard,” he added. The home minister said that necessary security measures will be implemented to observe Mass Killing Day and celebrate Independence Day.

On March 25, 1971, Pakistani forces had mercilessly killed a number of innocent people at Razarbagh police line, then the BDR headquarters at Pilkhana, and Dhaka University areas. After 46 years of achieving independence, the government had declared March 25 as Mass Killing Day in 2017 to mark the dastardly killings by the Pakistani forces.
