Favourites Bangladesh Navy emerged unbeaten champions in the Independence Day Basketball  tournament which concluded at Dhanmondi Basketball Gymnasium in the capital yesterday.

Navy piloted by Mithun and Soheb went on to beat Bangladesh Army 70-55 in a final where the winners kept the lead although. In fact the scoreline did not reflect the true picture of the match as both teams tried to entertain the crowd with attacks and counter-attack game. A number of national team cagers played in the final for both teams. Navy won the match by virtue of having better marksmanship than their counterparts.

Army managed to produce some effective resistance during the pre-breather session as they were trailing by just four (30-26) points.

Mithun as usual became the highest scorer for Navy caging 22 points. Soheb followed him with 19. Wadud and Mithun Sarkar contributed 16 and 14 points for Army.

Earlier, Border Guard Security (BGB) outplayed  Shawons Club 63-39 in a third placing play-off.

Twelve teams divided into four groups took part in the three-day tournament.

National Sports Council secretary Md Masud Karim distributed prizes as chief guest. Bangladesh Basketball Federation vice-president Moinul Ahsan Manjoo and general secretary A K Sarker Bhaya were also present.
