The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved six projects, including one to construct multistoreyed buildings for insolvent freedom fighters in every district and upazila across the country, reports UNB. The approval came from the 19th ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year, held at the NEC conference room here with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The 'Construction of Multistoreyed Bhaban for Insolvent Freedom Fighters in Every Disyrict/Upazila Project' is involved with an estimated cost of Tk 2,273.21 crore and the total cost will come from the national exchequer, said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal while briefing reporters after the meeting.

Under the project, the 532 five-storey buildings will be constructed in 354 upazilas of the county's 64 districts, he said.

There will be total 8,000 flats, each having 982-square feet space, in the multistorey buildings for insolvent freedom fighters under the project which will be implemented by June 2020.

The Liberation War Affairs Ministry placed the project as the Prime Minister on January 18, 2015 gave directives during her visit to the ministry to allocate 10,000 flats among insolvent freedom fighters across the country by constructing multistoreyed buildings, he said.

The objective of the project is to improve the lifestyle of freedom fighters who fell behind socio-economically, he added.

The Planning Minister said a total of six projects were placed at the ECNEC meeting. "The meeting approved all the six projects involving an overall cost of Tk 7,466.73 crore," he said.

Of the total estimated cost, Tk 7,026 crore will come from the national, while Tk 440 crore as project assistance, he said.

Of the six projects, five ones are new, while the rest one project is revised one.

The five other projects are Climate Resilient Infrastructures Institutionalisation Project (involving estimated cost of Tk 662 crore), Comprehensive Village Development Programme (CVDP) (3rd phase) Project (Tk 301.05 crore), Important Urban Infrastructure Development (2nd phase) Project (Tk 3,465.50 crore), the project of Airport Bypass Intersection-Lalbagh-Salutikor-Companiganj-Bholaganj Road Upgradation to National Highway (Tk626.93 crore), and the project of Construction of New 12-storeyed Building with Relevant Facilities to Expand Bangladesh Supreme Court (Tk 138.04 crore).

The Climate Resilient Infrastructures Institutionalisation Project will be implemented from January 2018 to December 2023 in 20 upazilas and one municipality under three districts - Satkhira, Bhola and Barguna.

Construction of 45 new cyclone centers, repairing 20 existing cyclone centers, development of 82 kilometer-connectivity roads and setting up of 200 tube-wells are among the key works of the project.

Of the total estimated cost of Tk662 crore, Tk 222 crore will come from government funds, while the rest Tk 440 crore as project assistance (from Green Climate Fund & KFW), the minister said.
