Alliance partners of the Awami League (AL) have observed that the next general election should be held with the participation of all registered political parties of the country. Alliance leaders said they do not want to see a January 5-like election in future. Talking to this correspondent yesterday (Thursday), the ruling alliance leaders came up with such statements. The Independent correspondent spoke to the alliance leaders on the latest political situation at the AL's Dhanmondi political office after a 14-party meeting. The president of the Workers' Party of Bangladesh, Rashed Khan Menon, said people would not accept lopsided elections in the country anymore. “We don’t want to see a January 5-like election in future. We want the 11th parliamentary elections to be held with the participation of all political parties,” he added.

Sharif Nurul Ambia, a factional chief of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Ambia), said the next polls shoulde be inclusive. “As the BNP has given up violent programmes, the next polls should be held keeping that party in the electoral race,” he added.

Gonotantri Party presidium member Nurur Rahman Selim said the next election should be held in due time with the participation of all political parities. “People will not accept January 5-like elections anymore. So, the government should hold a free, fair and inclusive election in line with the country’s Constitution,” he added. Mohammad Nasim, coordinator of the AL-led 14-Party alliance, said the next parliamentary polls would be held in due time as per the constitutional guidelines, and all registered political parties should join the elections.

“Each political party has the right to join any election in a parliamentary democracy system, and I hope the BNP will join the polls eventually,” Nasim, also an AL presidium member, said.

He was talking to reporters at a press conference after holding a joint meeting with alliance partners at the AL's Dhanmondi political office in the city.

Nasim, who is also the health minister, said the next election would be held under the Sheikh Hasina government irrespective of whether the BNP joins it or boycotts it. The AL wants the next parliamentary elections to be held keeping BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia behind bars, said party insiders.

The incumbent Sheikh Hasina government wants to hold the 11th parliamentary polls in December this year. On February 8, a Dhaka special court convicted Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. The former three-time prime minister is now in the Old Dhaka central jail at Najumuddin Road. Ruling party insiders think that the BNP chief’s imprisonment might be prolonged till the next parliamentary election. Even if she gets bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, Khaleda might be shown arrested in other cases filed against her earlier.    Even some of themare saying that KhaledaZia might have to stay in jail for the rest of her life.
