UP chairman, associates vandalise mill wall

Our Correspondent, Narsingdi

The chairman of Meherpara union parishad and his associates have vandalised a 380-feet-long protection wall of Unilon Textile Mills, violating the order of the additional district magistrate (ADM) in the Bhagiratpur area of Sadar upazila.  The authorities of Unilon Textile Mills Ltd at a press briefing, held at the Narsingdi Press Club around 11:30am on Wednesday, said Meherpara union parishad started constructing an 800-feet-long drain at a cost of Tk 20 lakh near the textile mill.  UP chairman Mahbubul Hasan demanded that the mill authorities hand over a parcel of three-feet-wide and about 400-feet-long mill land for the construction of the drain.  The management of the textile mill told the UP chairman that they would provide them a two-feet-wide land plot in public interest.

The proposal angered Mahbubul Hasan and his associates. They hired some 40 to 50 outsiders and started vandalising the 340-feet-long protection wall of the mill. They also occupied a four-feet-wide and 380-feet-long slice of land in the process.

The mill authorities filed a petition with the additional district magistrate’s (ADM) court under Section 145 to stop the construction work on the mill land.  The additional district magistrate (ADM), after hearing the petition, ordered the officer-in-charge of Madhabdi police station to maintain law and order peace on the disputed land. The court also ordered suspension of the construction work.

But the UP chairman and his men violated the court order and started digging earth beside the mill and accordingly damaged its pillars. Contacted, Mahbubul Hasan claimed that the court had not asked him to stop the construction work. The mill management did not file any case against him and there was no objection to constructing the drain, he also claimed.
