Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre has organised an evening of ‘Recitation and Songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam’ by Khilkhil Kazi and Salauddin Ahmed’ today at Kobi Sufia Kamal auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbagh in the capital.
Khilkhil Kazi is the daughter of Kazi Sabyasachi and granddaughter of Kazi Nazrul Islam. In her childhood, she learnt music from her father. After independence of Bangladesh, on the invitation of Bangabandhu in 1972 Khilkhil Kazi came with her parents to Bangladesh and settled here. Her first teacher in music in Bangladesh was Bedher Hussain. She has also learnt music from Salauddin Ahmed. She has performed with eminent singers of Bangladesh such as Ferdousi Rahman, Bedher Uddin Ahmed, Sourav Hussain, Khaled Hussain etc. She has also given performances in many foreign countries. She has received several awards, namely Crest of Honour from the Indian Parliament in 2003, Nazrul Award from Nazrul Academy in 2014 and Nazrul Award from Nazrul Institute and Ministry of Culture in 2014.
Salahuddin Ahmed, a veteran music exponent of Bangladesh, learnt music from his father in his early years and later trained under stalwarts like Nirmalendu Biswas, Ustad A Daud (for Classical Music) and Pandit Sukumar Mitra (for Nazrul Sangeet, Ghazal & Bhajans). He teaches at the Nazrul Institute and the Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts. He also worked as a part-time teacher at the Jatiyo Kobi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymemsingh and in Bulbul Lalitakala Academy and Nazrul Academy as a senior teacher in Nazrul Sangeet. He has also established a music institution named ‘TAALIM’. Many talented young performers in Bangladesh are his students.
