AL plans big ahead of next polls

AL plans big ahead of next polls

The ruling Awami League (AL) wants to carry out a massive election campaign by holding rallies, public meetings and mass contact programmes across the country till the end of this year in an attempt to ensure its victory in the next general elections, scheduled to be held this December. AL insiders said the party will hold four mega programmes throughout the month of March, which will reflect the party’s election campaign. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to attend a public meeting in Khulna today. The party will hold a mammoth rally at Suhrawardy Uddyan on March 7. The ruling AL is also planning party programmes on March 22 and 26.

Sheikh Hasina, who is also the AL president, recently attended three mammoth rallies in Sylhet, Barisal and Rajshahi, where she sought votes for her party symbol ‘Nouka’ (boat) during the next general elections.

Insiders of the ruling party said their arch rival, the BNP, would not be allowed to hold any big gathering in the city and elsewhere in the country ahead of the 11th parliamentary elections. They argued that BNP leaders and workers create anarchic conditions under the pretext of observing their party programmes.

The BNP, a major political party in the country, is currently running around in the courts to secure the release of its chairperson, Khaleda Zia, who was convicted and sentenced to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. The party has also been carrying out agitations on the streets, defying different obstacles, demanding her release.

Nevertheless, on February 22, the party had sought permission from the government to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Uddyan in the capital, demanding the release of its party chairperson, but was denied permission to hold any such rally in the city.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the BNP sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) registering its objection to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ‘unilateral’ election campaign in favour of her party, both at home and abroad, entailing expenditure of public money. BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir wrote the missive to chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.

In the letter, the BNP described elaborately when and how the PM had sought votes for her party’s election symbol ‘boat’ from the country’s people at different rallies and from Bangladesh expatriates during her tours of different countries.

Meanwhile, the ruling party is planning a big show of strength through the Suhrawardy gathering on March 7 after the conviction of Hasina’s arch enemy, Khaleda Zia.

Party insiders said they had already made massive preparations to stage a big show as it wants to send a message to the nation ahead of the next city and national polls that the people of the country are with the AL and its government.

AL president and PM Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the rally as the chief guest and to address the rally. The rally will begin at 2:30pm.

The party has taken up seven-day-long programmes from March 1 to 7, marking the celebrations of the recognition of the historic 7th March speech of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, as a world documentary heritage.

About the party preparations in respect of these programmes, AL deputy office secretary, barrister Biplob Barua, last week told The Independent that they had already directed party leaders and workers across the country to elaborately observe these programmes.

He also said each district, upazila and union will be illuminated and Bangabandhu’s speech will be played across the country starting from March 1. The entire country will be adorned with different types of banners and festoons inscribed with the portraits of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, the party’s top brass has also directed leaders and workers of different associate bodies of the party to make the rally a success by spontaneously taking part in it. The party has also directed the leaders and workers from districts adjacent to Dhaka to attend the meeting on time and ensure huge participation to make Saturday’s rally a grand success.

To ensure the success of the March 7 rally, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader had last week called a joint meeting at the Priyanka Community Center in front of the Dhanmondi party office. About the preparations for the March 7 rally, the AL general secretary said the party has prepared well, and he expects nearly a lakh at the rally. The March 7 rally will turn the zone in Dhaka into a human sea, he hoped.

Talking to this correspondent about their preparations, Dhaka South City AL general secretary Shahe Alam Murad said they are getting ready to turn the rally area into a human sea. “We have made plans to garner thousands from the city and its adjacent districts to make the rally a success. We have already asked the leaders and workers from all thanas and wards of Dhaka to make the rally a success by ensuring the participation of huge numbers of people,” he said.
