Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Test series tit-bit

Sports Reporter

Sabbir and cameraman’s sense of humor

On a day, when Bangladesh fielders missed as many as seven catches in 14 overs between 42 to 56 overs, Sabbir Rahman’s miss proved costly. He was stationed at first slip all the day long and here he missed two chances, all of the bowling off Mustafizur Rahman. He dropped Chandimal on 6, the batsman went on to score 30, a not significant score but his 51-run partnership with Roshen Silva took Sri Lanka out of danger. Sabbir then dropped Lakmal on 0 and the batsman remained not out on 7 and Sri Lanka wasn’t bowled out on day two. When Sabbir missed Lakmal, TV replay showed a video clip where Sabbir was seen practicing slip-catching with assistant coach Richard Halsall. To his woe, he also missed everything at slip during the practice. A time when he kept missing catches in main match, the clip produced laughter and everyone praising the cameraman’s sense of humour.

Lakmal’s resurgence

Suranga Lakmal now is the mainstay of Sri Lanka bowling attack and proved time and again, he could be the next Chaminda Vass of the side. Lakmal's improvement was in the last two years--his stats before Jan 2016 - 26 matches and 54 wickets at 58 avg. Since then - 18 matches, he took 48 wickets at 37 average. He was however wrecker-in-chief in Bangladesh’s first innings, opening the floodgate by taking out overnight unbeaten batsman Liton Das on the fifth over of the day.

No wicket for Herath!

Seasoned left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was supposed to be the killer of Bangladesh on a pitch that offered turn and bounce aplenty. Bangladesh batsman might be all out for 110 but they never gave up against Herath who eventually went wicket-less after bowling 12 overs. That was indeed surprising. Indeed Mehidi Hasan Miraj treated him so disdainfully with a six and four in an over that the captain didn’t call him in bowling later. However Herath might be conquered but off-spinner Akila Dananjaya caused the most damage by taking three for just 20.

Tail-enders fact!

Bangladesh technical director Khaled Mahmud Sujon time and again spoke about the performance of tail-enders and worked intensively with them. However the result didn’t come in light. While Sri Lanka tail-enders gave the side 112 runs in its first innings, Bangladesh tail-ender produced just three runs. In fact Bangladesh lost five wickets for three runs in 20 balls to concede a massive 112 runs lead. Sri Lankan tail-enders also fared well in the second innings and still giving Roshen Silva a good company.
