Construction work of Ctg marine drive begins in March

CHITTAGONG: The construction works of 80-feet width Embankment-Cum-Marine Drive on the bank of the river Karnaphuli with an expenditure of around Tk 2,275 crore is expected to begin in March, reports BSS.

Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has taken up the long cherished project to get rid of acute water logging problem and tidal surge in a massive part of the city.

The road nearly 8.5-kilometre long, 24-feet height from the sea level and stretching from Shah Amanat Bridge to Kalurghat Bridge will be constructed on the west bank of the river Karnaphuli.

CDA has already completed tender procedures in January last and approval of the construction works are now awaiting from the purchase committee of Housing and Public Works Ministry, Project Director (PD) of the Embankment-Cum-Marine Drive Rajib Das said. “We hope that the construction works of the much waited embankment-cum-marine drive will start by the first week of March after receiving the approval of the purchase committee from the concerned ministry,” he said.

PD Rajib Das told BSS that survey of the feasibility study and design for construction of the 60-feet road widening has already been completed.

CDA has already completed acquisition of 59.50 hectares of land to construct 12 regulators and pump houses, 2,12,500 square metres of slab protection, sand filling, consultation, survey and procurement of vehicles, he added.

He also said the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

Earlier, Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on April 25 in 2017.

The embankment-cum-road will be a four-lane one as much as higher and broaden as per the guidelines of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and survey of the Chittagong Metropolitan Master Plan in 1995, CDA sources said.

A total of 12 high-tide protection regulators and pump-houses will also be installed in the mouths of 12 canals for quick removal of water from the submerged city areas, the sources said.

Talking to BSS CDA Chairman Abdus Salam said the project is being executed with the direct consent of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina which would immensely contribute easing nagging water logging problem and tidal surge of the vast low lying portion of the city.

“We hope to start the works of the mega project in first week of March,” Salam said.
