Affected people to get 624 flats

The government has decided to construct 624 flats of 1000-square feet near the Uttara third phase in the capital for the rehabilitation of people who are affected due to Dhaka elevated expressway (DEE) project. An agreement was signed in this regard to construct the flats under public private partnership (PPP) projects at city’s Banani Setu Bhaban yesterday. A total of 12 buildings of 15-storey will be constructed in two-blocks at a cost of Tk 625.59 crore for the affected people because of elevated expressway.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway, one of the largest infrastructures of the country, aims to reduce traffic congestion of the capital. After completion, the expressway will connect Shahjalah airport with Kutubkhali area in Dhaka- Chittagong highway.

The route also will travel different parts in the capital including Banani, Mohakhali, Tejgaon, Kamalapur, Sayadabad and Jatrabari areas. The length of the expressway is around 46.73km (including the connecting roads) and will cost about 122 billion.

Kazi Mohammad Ferdous, PPP project director of support to Dhaka Elevated Expressway under Bangladesh Setu Kartipakkha, and Sung-Joo Kim, South Korean firm Samwan and Bangladeshi firm Mir Akhter JV, signed the agreement on three packages on behalf of their respective organizations. Managing director of the Civil Engineering Ltd. Atiqur Rahman also signed the agreement on behalf of his company.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was present during the signing ceremony.

“A total of six buildings of 15-storey will be constructed under Block-A to rehabilitate the affected people at a cost of Tk 348.79 crore. The total number of flats will be 624 and each flat will have 1000 square feet,” Obaidul Quader said reporters after agreement signing event.

Another 15-storey six buildings under block-B will be constructed at a cost of Tk 276.80 crore, the minister said, adding that the total number of flats will be 624 while block – B flats will have 850 square feet space inside.

All the necessary public facilities like schools, mosques, community markets and centres, community clinics, playground, sewerage treatment plant, secondary transfer station, electrical sub-station, inland streets, drains and deep tube wells will be ensured for the people at both the blocks, Obaidul Quader said.

A total of Tk 165.60 crore will be spent to construct these services providing structures, added the minister. Senior secretary of the Bridges Division, Khandaker Anwarul Islam, and other high officials were present during the signing ceremony among others.
