Canadian artist Pachter's retrospective exhibition kicks off in capital

A 14-day art exhibition of Canadian contemporary artist Charles Pachter was inaugurated at the Nalini Kanta Bhattasali Gallery of Bangladesh National Museum yesterday, UNB.

Slated to run from February 5 to 18, it has been organised under the collaboration of the Canadian Community of Arts Initiative (CCAI), the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka, artcon and the Bangladesh National Museum.

The exhibition is curated by CCAI's internationally acclaimed visual artist and curator Asma Mahmood.

The exhibition was inaugurated at the museum's Sufia Kamal Auditorium by chairman of Bengal Foundation Abul Khair Litu.

Speaking about the artist, Abul Khair said that the excellence of Pachter's artistry can be deduced through his artworks found throughout Canada, at the Canadian Embassy in Washington and many other places.

Faizul Latif Chowdhury, Director General of the Bangladesh National Museum, said that Charles Pachter is a person of multifarious dimensions, given his identity as an artist, author and several more.

He also added that Pachter's versatility is reflected through his artworks.

Asma Mahmood explained that the exhibition has been set up in a way in which an element of storytelling is evident, as if there are clusters of conversations going on between 2 or 3 paintings.

On behalf of the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka, First Secretary Barry Bristman said that it was an honour for them to be able to organise an exhibition of a Canadian artist of Pachter's stature in Bangladesh.

He expressed optimism that such collaborations between the Canadian and Bangladeshi art community will be more frequent in future.

Certificates of Appreciation were distributed by him and director of CCAI Nain Amyn, to Faizul Latif Chowdhury and art collector Durjoy Rahman for making the exhibition a reality.

"I am delighted to hold my exhibition here in Bangladesh," Charles Pachter told UNB, and went on to praise the hospitality he received from the Bangladeshis.

Among others, the Bangladeshi Advisor of CCAI and Director of Gallery Cosmos Tehmina Enayet was also present.

One of Canada's leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian, and lecturer.

Born in Toronto, he studied art history at the University of Toronto, French literature at the Sorbonne, and painting and graphics at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. He is represented in public and private collections throughout Canada, and internationally. He has held solo exhibitions in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and India.
