Security to be highest priority in
next polls: IGP

Newly appointed inspector general of police, Mohammad Javed Patwari, yesterday said he would try his best to ensure security and safety for people before and during the upcoming parliamentary polls. Javed Patwari, who was additional inspector general of police for the Special Branch (SB) for the past seven years, took charge from outgoing IGP Shahidul Haque on Wednesday. “The next election will be handled by the Election Commission (EC), while the police will ensure security in a professional way,” he said.

A day before he took over, BNP activists had attacked policemen at the High Court (HC) in Dhaka. Political tension has been mounting gradually ahead of the impending verdict on February 8 in a corruption case in which BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia stands accused.

Besides, there is general apprehension that there would be growing unrest over the next few months in the run up to the general election, which is likely to be held around the end of this year.

Responding to journalists’ queries, the IGP said: "The EC will conduct the election. We'll continue to ensure the safety of people's lives. " “If police get everyone’s cooperation, terrorism and militancy will have zero tolerance,” he added.

Earlier in the morning, the new IGP went to Dhanmondi 32 and paid his tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Javed Patwari said that the menace of drugs, just like the menace of militancy, could only be eliminated with everybody's cooperation.

He said drugs stressed the need for united effort to eradicate drug addiction. He also said that he would take steps to increase the police capacity to curb cyber crime and upgrade the quality of service at police stations.
