Dhaka Premier Cricket League to start Feb 18

Sports Reporter

Cricket Committee of the Dhaka Metropolitan (CCDM) decided to start the next edition of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPDCL), the premier cricket league of the country, on February 5 without the national pool players.

The national players will then be busy in the bilateral series against Sri Lanka at home turf but they could play the rest of the league from February 18 in the aftermath of the home series.

Before the start of the league, the players distribution among the clubs for the league will be held by the ‘players by choice’, which will be held on January 20.

Kazi Inam Ahmed, chairman of the Cricket Committee of the Dhaka Metropolitan (CCDM), stated all to media after holding a meeting with the participating clubs’ officials and representatives at the board room of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

“We had wishes from the initial period, even our president Nazmul Hassan Papon told us to start the new cricket season with the country’s main league, Dhaka Premier League (DPL). According to that, we wanted to begin the league in the last week of January or the first week of February,” said Kazi Inam Ahemd, who is also an elected director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

“But you all know we have a lack of grounds along with other problems. National Cricket League (NCL) meanwhile finished. Although Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) will get underway on January 8, the BCL will be played three-round games this time around, which will be ended on January 24,” Kazi Inam told reporters.

“So, we had a plan to hold players’ draft for the DPL, which will be held on January 20. This time the players will be distributed by players by choice system. The clubs could start their practice on January 25. And so, we could easily begin the league on February 5,” he added.

Inam was flanked by CCDM vice-chairman Masud Ahmed and its member secretary Ali Hossain, among others, were also present.

This year each team of the league could retain five previous year’s players what was earlier two that was fixed by the bulk of the clubs. The rest of the players will be distributed by the players by choice system, which has been re-enforced in the DPL after the 2016 season.

The CCDM chairman said that they have taken measures to ensure the players’ payment after re-enforcing the players by choice system in DPL.

“As ‘players by choice’ is being held, there were always concerns of regular payments from the players so we’ve decided clubs will pay 50 percent of the payment to the retained players before the draft,” he said, adding: “The rest twenty-five percent of the payment will have to clear during the tournament and the remaining 25 percent payment will have to pay within the seven days of the end of the tournament.”

The chairman by saying this warned the participating clubs that if any club will miss to clear the initial payment within their timeframe what will be before the players draft, their retention players will open for the draft.

“We’ve kept the retention system. As per it, every club could keep five players as retention,” he said.

“We’ll give a date before the players’ by choice to clear the initial slab of the payment. If any club fails to clear the initial payment, we will then open for the draft,” he added.
