Students confine chairman for 2hrs

CU CORRESPONDENT

A group of students of the Department of Sanskrit  of Chittagong University (CU) yesterday confined the department’s chairman Professor Shupti Kona Mozumdar for two hours, putting the room under lock and key demanding they be allowed to sit for the second year final examination.

Hearing this news assistant proctor of CU Liton Mitro rushed to the room with police personnel and unlocked her.

Sources said, second year final exam of the department was supposed to be held yesterday around 11am. But seven students of the department were not allowed to sit in the exam due to their poor attendance of the classes.  As they did not take part in the test, they along with their friends started protesting before the start of the examination.

The students were Fahmida Sultana, Md Mujahid, Tushar Talukder, Nayan Chandra Modak, Hasna Hena, Md Ikramul Alam and Falguni Das. All of them were second year students of the department, academic session 2015-2016.   They alleged that the department allegedly allowed a female student to take part in the exam who is working in a government office in the capital though she has not enough attendance in the classes. But we are not allowed to sit for the exam. The department cannot run with two principles.

While contacted Professor Shupti Kona Mazumdar, chairman of the department, said “Attendance of seven students was less than 30 per cent. Although they requested twice, the academic committee was unanimously rejected it. There is no chance to do anything without academic committee.”

She denied the allegation against her and said that it is not right. The next decision in this regard will be taken at the emergency meeting of the academic committee.

“After hearing this matter we rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control and unlocked the chairman. We will talk to the chairman about the issue,” said, Liton Mitro, assistant proctor of CU.
