Tension roils as BNP, BCL face off

Tight security in Barisal for tomorrow’s meetings

The law enforcing agencies in the city and across the district have taken tight security measures as both Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) called meetings at the same place and same time in observance of their different programmes tomorrow (Jan 5).

BNP city and district units called a black flag procession and meeting at 10 am in front their party office on the Aswini Kumar town hall premises to observe what it said Democracy Killing Day.

At the same time and same place city unit BCL called rally and meeting to observe their founding anniversary. City Awami League (AL) also called separate programme marking its ‘Democracy Victory Day.

AL city president Advocate Golam Abbas Chowdury Dulal said “All preparations of their programme already completed. We requested BNP to avoid chaos as we want equal stand of politics”, he added.

At the same time acting secretary of city BNP Ziauddin Sikdar said “We informed the matter to metropolitan police authorities and we will stay on the road to success our programme”. He said arranging programme by BCL at the same date same time and same venue is the sign of killing democracy, he added.  Soheb Ahmed, DC headquarters of Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP), said they have taken tight security measures and deployed additional law enforce personnel all over the district and in the city to take the situation under control.

SM Ruhul Amin, commissioner of BMP, said we are trying to make negotiation over the meeting timing and place of the both parties. If it is not possible BMP will take strict stand to control law and order situation. If needed, we will impose section 144 at the meeting venue, he added. BMP commissioner said that more than six hundred members of different law enforcing agencies were engaged in this duty with arms and metal detectors.

Besides police, RAB and armed police battalion started patrolling on the city roads and out skirts.
