Biman celebrates 46th anniversary today

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier, is set to celebrate its 46th anniversary today embarking on a forward looking vision to add ‘Boeing Dreamliner’ for the first time to its fleet this year, reports BSS.

Founded on January 4, 1972 just 19 days after the emergence of Bangladesh as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is also envisioning to expand its network by operating its flights to three more new international destinations.

“Biman is going to enter a new era this year as two brand new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners will be added to its fleet for the first time,” Biman’s Managing Director and CEO AM Mosaddique Ahmed told the news agency.

Apart from procuring Dreamliners, the Biman chief said, the national flag carrier is set to operate its flights to three new destinations—Guangzhou of China, Colombo of Sri Lanka and Male of the Maldives.

Biman General Manager (Public Relations) Shakil Meraj said Biman earned Tk 47 crore net profit during 2016-17 fiscal year after paying Tk 381 crore as taxes.

The national flag carrier carried 23,51,000 passengers and 33,542 tonnes of cargoes in last eight fiscal years. So far, around 5.25 crore passengers traveled by Biman since its inception, he added.

Biman will make its anniversary day memorable by giving gifts to all its departing passengers from Dhaka today. The employees of the national airlines will also bring a rally in the capital and cut a cake to mark the day.

The Biman fleet includes 4 Boeing 777-300 ER, 2 Boeing 777-800 ER, 2 Boeing 777-200 ER, 2 Dash-8 Q400 and one Airbus A330.

Presently, the Biman is operating flights to 15 international and all 7 domestic destinations.
