‘Village courts capable of resolving disputes quickly’

RANGPUR: Justice Md Shawkat Hossain of the High Court Division of Supreme Court recently said the village courts can ensure justice and earn confidence of the rural people through resolving local disputes quickly, reports BSS.

“The union parishad chairmen should remember that they are judges when they sit for conducting proceedings of the village courts to deliver justice,” he said while addressing a workshop held at Badarganj upazila parishad auditorium here recently as chief guest.

Badarganj upazila administration organised the workshop on ‘Role of Local Government and Non-governmental Organisations in Enhancing Mass Public Awareness about Village Courts’ under Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh (second phase) project.

The Local Government Division has been implementing the project through Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO) in 41 unions under five upazilas of Rangpur with financial assistance of the European Union and UNDP. Fifty participants including chairmen of all ten union parishads of Badarganj upazila, upazila level government officials and NGO representatives and journalists took part. With Badarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rashedul Haque in the chair, upazila Chairman Fazle Rabbi Sweet, upazila Vice-chairman Rubina Akhter and Officer-in-Charge of Badarganj Thana Md Akhteruzzaman attended the workshop as special guests.

District Coordinator of ESDO Abu Bakkar Siddique delivered PowerPoint presentation narrating goals of the project, village court activities, outreach activities, achievement of the village courts and future outreach planning for Badarganj upazila.
