Shikder Bari

Shikder Bari

The history of the zamindars (landlords) of Faridpur is quite significant. The Shikders were one of the most prominent among the famous zamindars. They rose to prominence mostly under Rani Bhabatarini, a widow who took over the zamindari and was a competent ruler of her time. She was also very efficient in dealing with her businesses and trading throughout India.

Shikder Bari is located at Kanaipur village in Faridpur Sadar upazila. Bhabatarini built the palatial house in the second half of the 19th century. During her reign, the Shikders were most successful in expanding their estate in that area. Rani Bhabatarini used to rule the estate with the support of her son only son, Satish Chandra Shikder, and one of her trusted employees.

There are several buildings and temples on the grounds of the house that still bear the fascinating legacy of their luxurious life. Though most of the buildings are in a ruinous state at present, the Durga temple is can still be used, which indicates it was built several years after the other buildings.

We can assume that this zamindar house was built in the transition period of feudalism in Bengal. But Shikder Bari is no less significant as a heritage site of Bangladesh.
