13 killed, over 15 injured as lorry rams electric post near Srikalahasti

Thirteen persons were killed in a ghastly road mishap when a lorry hit an electric pole and further rammed into a general store at Yerpedu, 25 km from Tirupati on the Srikalahasti highway on Friday noon, said the Deputy Superintendent of Police. Over 15 injured persons were rushed to SVR Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati.

The incident happened right in front of Yerpedu police station, when a speeding truck coming from Srikalahasti towards Tirupati lost control and hit the electric pole first. As the pole capsized, the live wires snapped causing electrocution to a few.

It was initially thought to be a road mishap, but when the local people rushed to help the victims, many succumbed to the electric shock. Six people died immediately when the lorry ploughed into the crowd, while others died in the incident. The number of casualties might go up to 20.

Yerpedu is at the ‘T’ junction, leading to Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri towns and the accident spot is close to this junction.

Traffic came to a standstill on all directions. Police officials and ambulances rushed to the spot.
