Families of 9 Italian victims to get money

In a first of its kind gesture, the Bangladesh government will provide financial help to family members of nine Italians killed in the militant attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan on July 1 last year.  Each of the families will be given 15,000 euro, which is equivalent to Tk. 13.30 lakh, sources in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the home ministry said.  The nine Italians are Cristian Rossi, Marco Tondat,  Nadia Benedetti, Adele Puglisi, Simona Monti, Claudia Maria D'Antona, Vincenzo D'Allestro, Maria Rivoli and Claudio Cappelli.  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the authorities concerned to release 1,35,000 euro (Tk. 1.19 crore) for the purpose, the sources added.
A senior official of the PMO, not wanting to be named, told The Independent that the money would be made available either from the Prime Minister’s relief fund or another source of the government.  The official said the family members of the Italian victims recently requested the Bangladesh ambassador in Italy to provide financial assistance. The ambassador forwarded a letter in this regard to the Prime Minister's principal secretary.  “When the letter was put up before the Prime Minister, she directed that Euro 15,000 be provided to family members of the victims,” he added.
When contacted, a senior official of the home ministry, requesting anonymity, told this correspondent that they received a letter from the PMO on March 29, saying that financial help be provided. They are now in touch with officials concerned regarding the procedure to hand over the money to the family members of the victims.  Asked about nine other foreigners—seven Japanese and an Indian among them—killed in the Gulshan attack, the official said they are not aware about any financial help to them.  The seven Japanese are Hideki Hashimoto, Nobuhiro Kurosaki, Koyo Ogasawara, Makoto Okamura, Yuko Sakai, Rui Shimodaira Shimodaira Rui and Hiroshi Tanaka.  Tarishi Jain is the Indian killed.  On the night of July 1 last year, at 9:20pm local time, five militants took diners hostage and opened fire in the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan. In all, 29 people were killed. Among them were 20 hostages (18 foreigners and two locals), two policemen, five attackers and two bakery employees.
