Shabdaboli stages ‘Desire Under the Elms’ at Shilpakala

Shabdaboli Group Theatre staged their 63rd production ‘Desire Under the Elms’, written by American playwright Eugene O’Neill, at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Shahbag on Tuesday. The play has been translated by Kabir Choudhury while Fazlur Rahman Palash has directed the play.

The play shows widower Ephraim Cabot abandons his New England farm to his three sons who hate him, but share his greed. Eben, the youngest and brightest sibling, feels the farm is his birthright, as it originally belonged to his mother. He buys the farm from his half-brothers with money stolen from his father, and Simeon and Peter, his brothers, head off to California to find gold. Later, Ephraim returns to his new wife, Abbie, who enters into an affair with Eben. She then bears Eben’s child, but convinces Ephriam that it is his in hopes of securing the farm. Afraid the child will ruin her relationship with Eben, she kills it. Eben turns her into the sheriff, but is so in love he ends up confessing to a part in the murder.
According to the director, ‘Desire Under the Elms’ Eugene O’Neill’s is one of the best writings. The play depicts love, jealousy, sex, lust, shrewdness, conflict and death.
In the play, Bulbul Ahmed Joy appeared as Ephraim Cabot while Anwar Shameem as Eben Cabot, Nabila Nasrin as Abbie. The other important casts of the play include Yeacher Arafat, Jahirul Islam, TI Topu.
