BNP leaders frustrated over new Dhaka city committees

BNP leaders frustrated over new Dhaka city committees

Despite the BNP announced two Dhaka metro committees dependent on youths, many party leaders and activists are frustrated with the newly announced body for Dhaka South and North as they see many senior leaders were either ignored or they did not get proper berths. Some leaders, however, observed that the new committees show that the BNP has come out of control of the former city committee dominated by two party stalwarts--Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Mirza Abbas. Many leaders also said that the committees have been chosen
by the party Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is now staying in London.
The main challenge of the new committees would be to complete the full bodies and form thana and ward level committees on time, they said.
Talking to The Independent, some BNP leaders said most of the party leaders are frustrated and aggrieved with the committees as, what they said, senior leaders were not properly evaluated.
Ignoring senior leaders in the committees may create a new problem with seniority in the rank and file to run the organisational activities, said some leaders.
Jatrabari thana BNP president and former ward commissioner Nabiullah Nabi has already announced that he would resign from his new post of vice chairman in the Dhaka South committee.
“I have decided to tender my resignation to the party secretary general within a couple of days on health ground,” he said.
Nabi, who was a prospective secretary candidate, however, said that he expects that the new committees would be able to forge a strong movement to force the government to quit.
Yunus Mridha, who was a prospective candidate for secretary general post for Dhaka South, also expressed his frustration as what he said his name was dropped from the post of general secretary at the last minute as per the desire of two leaders. He, however, did not disclose their names.
Yunus, known as a Mirza Abbas loyalist, further alleged that many senior leaders were not properly evaluated in the Dhaka south committee. He, however, said that he has total confident on the decision of the party chairperson and he would be with the party.
Newly elected general secretary of Dhaka South Kazi Abul Bashar
acknowledged that many potential leaders were dropped from the committee and said they would accommodate them later on.
Bashar, a former ward commissioner, said since the chairperson has entrusted them with the responsibility, they would try their level best to move forward taking party leaders and activists.
“We will try to complete the committee and form thana and ward level committees as early as possible,” he added.
BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said the new committees would work unitedly and carry the party towards its destination.
BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said he hoped that those who have been given the responsibility would try their best as they have good records in the past.
“What is important is that all should come forward to cooperate with the new committees and the party also expects it,” he added.
Earlier, the BNP announced the two city committees (partial) through a press release Tuesday midnight. The two Dhaka city units have been formed in the wake of failure of the city convening committee to reorganise the party at both thana and ward levels.
A 70-member committee of Dhaka South (partial) has been formed with party joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Kazi Abul Bashar as its president and general secretary while a 66-member committee of Dhaka North (partial) has been formed with former ward commissioner MA Quaiyum and Ahsanullah Hasan
as its president and general secretary respectively.
MA Quaiyum, along with six others, is a charge-sheeted accused in a case filed in connection with the murder of Italian aid worker Tavella Cesare.
The newly elected committee members yesterday greeted BNP chief Khaleda Zia with wreaths at her Gulshan office.
