City experiences 59kmph winds, thundershower

City dwellers experienced a rainstorm, accompanied by bolts of lightning, for nearly an hour yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. This left some of the streets waterlogged, causing traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters returning home after work.
Earlier, there was utter chaos on the streets, with people trying to escape from the rain and jostling for a place in packed buses, or haggling with auto-rickshaw and cycle-rickshaw drivers asking for higher fares.
The city was yet to recover from scarcity of buses during the past few days after the road transport authorities launched a drive against public transport owners, charging extra money in the name of "sitting", "gate lock" , "local" services and so on.
The rainfall was not much, only 16mm was recorded in an hour till 6pm by the Dhaka Met Office at Agargaon. But the winds and lightning caused most of the trouble.
The Met Office said windspeeds reached 59kmph in gusts at the Shahjalal Airport. Flights were affected by the thundershower, witnesses said.
But there were no reports of damage or casualties by the Fire Service control room well after the rain had stopped.
