The police have filed two separate cases against leaders and activists of the Chittagong city unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for allegedly vandalising a swimming pool construction site and clashing with policemen on Tuesday.
The cases have been filed against 59 named and 400–500 unnamed BCL activists and leaders at Kowtali police station. The accused include the president and secretary of the BCL’s Chittagong city unit.
Sub-inspector Mahiuddin Roton filed the case on the attack on police. The swimming pool construction manager, Shafiqul Islam Swapan, filed the vandalism case.
BCL city unit president Imran Ahmed Imu and general secretary Nurul Azim Rony have been accused in both cases, said Md Jahangir Alam, the assistant commissioner (Kowtali zone) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
The BCL president and general secretary are known to be followers of Awami League leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
On Sunday, the BCL’s city unit had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to stop the construction of the swimming pool. They claimed it was destroying the playground for emerging players.
Even before that, while speaking at a rally at Laldighi Maidan on April 10, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury had given a 15-day ultimatum to stop the construction. But the sports council went ahead with the construction about a week ago.
At 4pm on Tuesday, they went to the outer stadium area to observe their previously-declared programme. But the police barred them from entering the swimming pool area. A clash ensued, leaving at least 12 injured, including three policemen, injured.
“These are false cases to harass us. Police blocked our peaceful programme and fired on innocent leaders and activists,” claimed Imu.
Rony denied the charge that the BCL was responsible for the incident and the injured policemen. “I challenge the claim. The policemen were injured by their own bullets, but they filed a case against the BCL. We have requested the police not to file a case against us,” he said.
The BCL had called a rally at Central Shahid Minar to protest against the attack on BCL by the police at 3pm yesterday. But later, they scrapped the rally at the request of the central BCL, said Rony.
The swimming pool in question is being constructed on an area of 70,380 square feet at a cost of Tk. 11.40 crore in the outer stadium area next to the MA Aziz Stadium. The Chittagong sports body, Chittagong Jela Krira Sangstha, is supervising its construction. City mayor AJM Nasir Uddin is the general secretary of the Chittagong Jela Krira Sangstha.
