Every match is important for us at home: Papon

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Namzul Hasan Papon reminded the national cricket team that every point of the series against West Indies is important given the fact that the series is the part of ICC ODI Super League.

Bangladesh had already bagged the series by winning the first two matches of the three match series, making the third one a dead rubber.

But Papon said at this moment, no match is meaningless since a victory means, 10 points will be added.

“We had started our ICC ODI super league mission with this series and gained so far 20 points by winning the first two matches,” Papon said on Saturday.

“The series ending third match is equally important because we will get 10 points if we win this match and these points are important to play the World Cup directly. We don’t want to play qualifier for qualifying the World Cup,” he added.

Introduced last year to add context to ODI cricket, the Super League sees each side play four home and four away three-match series.

The tournament features the 12 ICC Full Members and the Netherlands, who qualified by winning the ICC World Cricket League Championship 2015-17. Teams get 10 points for a win, five for an abandonment/tie/no result and none for a loss, and ranked according to total points earned.

The sides failing to qualify directly get a second shot through the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier to be played in June and July of 2023.

After West Indies, Bangladesh will host Sri Lanka, England and Afghanistan while they will play away series in New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ireland. Those series are the part of ICC ODI Super League.

Papon reminded that while Bangladesh remains good at home, they still are vulnerable at foreign soil and so amassing as much points as possible at home should be Bangladesh’s target.

“While we won the series against the likes of India, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies at home, we are still vulnerable at foreign soil. So if we think in that line, every match at home is important for us,” the BCB boss remarked.
