Bangabandhu T20 Cup: Ali trio guide BEXIMCO Dhaka to win over Rajshahi

Yasir Ali’s 67 and Akbar Ali’s not out 45 were complemented by Muktar Ali’s four-for as BEXIMCO Dhaka thumped Minister Rajshahi by 25 runs in the 12th match of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur on Friday.

By winning the match, Dhaka recorded its back-to-back victory that uplifted its position in points-table. They rose to fourth from fifth (bottom) place in the 5-team meet.

Chasing the challenging 176 set by Dhaka, Minister Rajshahi went through huge pressure while losing three early wickets of Najmul Hossain Shanto, Anisul Islam Emon and Ashraful in just 4.1 overs when they were stuttering at 15-3.

Together with Captain Fazle Mahmud Rabbi, discarded national batsman Rony Talukdar struck together a 67-run partnership that put them back in the race and gave a glimmer of hope to chase down the target. Pacer Muktar Ali bowled Rony for 40. Rony Talukdar milked three sixes and a four in his 24-ball knock.

Fazle Mahmud followed Mahedi Hasan for a while. Their departures were hastened by Muktar Ali, who finished his bowling with the figures of 37-4. Mahmud smashed 58 off 40 with five fours and three sixes.

Basically Rajshahi’s hopes faded away with the departure of Fazle Mahmud and Rony Talukdar. Farhad Reza’s back-to-back sixes off Muktar Ali’s over was not enough to overhaul the target. Yasir Ali was named player of the match for his performance with bat.

Earlier, BEXIMCO Dhaka riding on Yasir Ali’s outstanding 67 and Akbar Ali’s brilliant unbeaten 45 mustered a challenging total of 175-5 against Minister Rajshahi.

Coming to bat first in Mirpur’s deck after being lost the toss, Dhaka sustained a blow in the very first over when make-shift opener Nayeem Hasan was trapped by off-spinner Sheikh Mahedi Hasan leg before wicket.

Captain Mushfiqur Rahim tried to handle the tethering trouble with national team colleague Mohammad Naim Sheikh. When the pair stitched together a 39-run partnership, spinner Arafat Sunny broke the stand. Naim Sheikh gave an easy catch behind the wicket after he made nine.

Just six runs later, Dhaka lost its young batsman Tanzib Hasan when they were reeling under pressure at 48-3. Young pacer Mukidul Islam was accountable for Tanzib, who got out for two. Dhaka mislaid its big wicket when they lost Mushfiqur Rahim, who went to hit pacer Mukidul that went to wicket-keeper touching his bat.

Rahim stroked 29-ball 37, hitting three boundaries and a six.

Well-set Yasir Ali Rabbi brought Dhaka back in the match when he struck a brilliant 100-run partnership that provided a strong total for Dhaka before his departure for 67. Rabbi blasted nine fours and a six in his 39-ball innings.

Thereby, Akbar Ali, whose leadership gave Bangladesh a credible ICC trophy in the ICC Under19 World Cup in 2020, finished the proceedings with Mukar Ali to put on 175-5 on the board.

He clobbered a brace of sixes along with three fours in his unbeaten 23-ball 45. Muktar Ali made a run-a-ball three to remain unbeaten at stumps.
