Montu wants quality tracks in school to groom up athletes

Montu wants quality tracks in school to groom up athletes

Abdur Rokib Montu, general secretary of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF), wants combined efforts for the development of country’s athletics and there is no alternative to international standard infrastructures to groom up quality athletes.

With the commitment to elevating Bangladesh athletics to a new height and regain its past glory, Montu took over the charge of the BAF after being elected just a year back with many commitments.

But Montu, professionally a lawyer at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, fulfilled part of his commitments by organizing national junior, national and summer meets timely in last year but Bangladesh failed to win any gold medal from track and field in the 13th SA Games.

In an interview with The Independent on Wednesday, Montu said that he realized in his first year’s experiences off four-year tenure that there are some essential requirements and issues related to bringing the athletes to a certain level.

“The first condition is to have number of quality athletes. In order to find real talents and grooming them up for international matches, we should have collaboration with the education ministry, local government administration, National Sports Council (NSC) and also the sports ministry.”

“The grassroots are the proper place to dig for athletes and it is very important to start practice and to organize athletics competitions at school and college level under the supervision of upazila and district administration.

“There should be legal provisions making it mandatory for all schools, colleges and Districts Sports Associations (DSA) to organize competitions with BAF so that we can pick talents for proper nursing,” said Montu.

“We should have infrastructures complying with international standards at national level and quality playgrounds in schools, college and district headquarters.”

“We are trying our best through federation but it is too tough to manage the districts to have their athletes in the national meets but it is difficult to have good number of talents,” Montu explained all about the necessities for producing quality athletes to bring back the glory of the past.

“Once we had the fastest man in the SAFF region. We had clear domination but we lost it due to the lack of having talents from the grassroots. But I still believe we are capable of reaching our target if we can run on the right track,” Montu replied to a query.
Meanwhile, Montu also informed that this year all their schedules of National, Junior and Summer meets had to be deferred due to coronavirus outbreak. They have planned to organize junior meet in November and the national meet in January 2021.

Montu also said, “We have no international standard track where we can organize the national meets. What we have at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) is almost obsolete. Renovation of the track at the BNS will commence soon. I opine to have the track set up by an international company authorized by the World Athletics Federation.
